Welcome to My Weebly Tricks, a resource for Weebly site owners who want to go beyond the basics. Here you'll find step-by-step guides on adding image effects, slideshows, navigation scripts, text animations, countdown timers, and more — all tailored for the Weebly platform.
Placeholder text is the short prompt that sits inside an empty input box until someone starts typing. Used well, it gives visitors an immediate idea of what to enter, which is especially helpful on a Weebly contact page where a long form can otherwise feel like a test. Customizing Weebly form fields with placeholder text can improve clarity, reduce accidental omissions and make a small business look considered without rebuilding the form.
The wording should suit the people using the form. A Melbourne cafe, a Sydney tradesperson and a regional service business may all receive enquiries, but their visitors need different guidance. Some need an email address, others prefer a mobile number, and many appreciate knowing when to expect a reply. A useful prompt answers “what belongs here?” while a permanent label and short instruction explain any extra requirement.
A placeholder is temporary context, not a permanent label. It disappears as soon as the field receives content, so it should never carry information that the visitor must read after typing. Keep a visible label such as “Email address” above the box, then use the prompt for shape or format: name@example.com.au, 04xx xxx xxx or DD/MM/YYYY.
This distinction also separates placeholders from helper text and default values. Helper text remains visible beneath a field and can explain terms such as “Your suburb and nearest postcode help us assign the right crew.” A default value is actual content entered into the field. Pre-filling “Australia” or a service category may save taps, but it can also create problems if a visitor edits the wrong box or submits the default without noticing.
Position matters as much as wording. When you decide where the form belongs, knowing what slots are helps if your Weebly template uses section-based content areas. A dedicated slot near the relevant service details often works better than placing a lead-capture form above an unrelated gallery, particularly on mobile screens where long scrolling already costs conversions.
In the Weebly editor, open the page containing the form and select the form rather than only clicking an individual box. Choose the form’s edit control, open the relevant text, email, phone or message field, and look for a placeholder option in the field settings. Weebly’s controls vary between editor releases and site plans, so treat this as the simplest route when the option is visible: enter the prompt, check the label separately and publish the page to see the result on the live site.
If your editor does not expose that setting, a small custom-code script can add prompts after the form loads. Add it through the custom code or embed facility available in your Weebly setup, replacing the example wording with your own. The following example recognises common Weebly field labels and leaves hidden anti-spam fields alone:
<script>
(function () {
function setPlaceholders() {
var fields = document.querySelectorAll(".w-form input, .w-form textarea");
fields.forEach(function (field) {
var type = (field.getAttribute("type") || "text").toLowerCase();
var allowed = ["text", "email", "tel", "url", "number", "search"];
if (field.tagName !== "TEXTAREA" && allowed.indexOf(type) === -1) return;
if (field.getAttribute("placeholder")) return;
var wrapper = field.closest(".w-form-field");
var label = wrapper ? wrapper.querySelector("label") : null;
var context = (((label && label.textContent) || "") + " " +
(field.name || "")).toLowerCase();
if (field.tagName === "TEXTAREA") {
field.setAttribute("placeholder", "Tell us what you need");
} else if (type === "email") {
field.setAttribute("placeholder", "your.name@example.com.au");
} else if (/phone|mobile|tel/.test(context)) {
field.setAttribute("placeholder", "04xx xxx xxx");
} else if (/postcode|zip/.test(context)) {
field.setAttribute("placeholder", "Four-digit postcode");
} else if (/company|organisation|business/.test(context)) {
field.setAttribute("placeholder", "Business or organisation name");
} else if (/name/.test(context)) {
field.setAttribute("placeholder", "Your full name");
}
});
}
if (document.readyState === "loading") {
document.addEventListener("DOMContentLoaded", setPlaceholders);
} else {
setPlaceholders();
}
})();
</script>
Run the script on the published site as well as in the editor preview. Custom code may not execute inside every editor preview, and a theme update can change class names or markup. The script only changes the visible prompt; it does not add validation, change which fields are required or alter where submissions are stored. Confirm that labels, required markers, confirmation messages and the recipient email still work after publishing.
Accessibility depends on the label and the prompt working together. A pale prompt inside an empty box may look elegant in a design mock-up but become difficult to read on a bright Australian afternoon or a low-quality phone screen. Aim for strong contrast, retain a clear focus outline and avoid placing essential instructions only in the placeholder.
If your theme makes the prompt too faint, adjust its appearance with a short CSS rule rather than replacing it with another shade of grey:
.w-form input::placeholder,
.w-form textarea::placeholder {
color: #5f6368;
opacity: 1;
}
.w-form input:focus,
.w-form textarea:focus {
outline: 2px solid #1a73e8;
outline-offset: 2px;
}
On mobile, the field type is just as important as its wording. An email field should request an email keyboard, a telephone field should use tel, and relevant fields can use browser autofill tokens such as autocomplete="email", tel or postal-code. Give dates as DD/MM/YYYY, and keep the prompt itself short enough not to disappear on narrow screens. If an Australian phone format needs clarification, show 04xx xxx xxx while still accepting +61 numbers.
Before publishing, point visitors to a clear privacy policy that explains what the form collects, why it is needed, who receives it and how long it is kept. That policy belongs to the website operator; this blog’s policy is an example of the kind of information visitors should find, not a substitute for a policy written for the business. Avoid collecting sensitive details that have no connection to the enquiry.
For a typical quote request, a name, contact method, suburb or town, state and a four-digit postcode may be enough. Ask for a full street address only when delivery or an on-site visit genuinely requires it. If the Australian Privacy Act and the Australian Privacy Principles apply, explain optional uses clearly and keep marketing consent separate from the action needed to answer the enquiry. Informal language can still be professional: “Could you quote for next Tuesday?” fits many Australian conversations, while no worries or arvo belongs in the example message only when it matches the brand’s voice.
A form can also load tools that affect data or device storage beyond its visible fields. Analytics scripts, live-chat widgets, map embeds and advertising pixels may do so, and a consent choice must appear before non-essential tracking starts where required. This cookie consent banner guide shows one way to add a banner in Weebly; pair it with your privacy notice rather than treating the banner as permission to collect unlimited information.
A reliable form is usually shorter than its owner expects. Every added field can reduce completion, so review the purpose of each one and remove anything that supports curiosity rather than service delivery. The following checks give a Weebly owner a practical way to prepare a clear, testable enquiry form.
04xx xxx xxx, DD/MM/YYYY, four-digit postcodes and prices in AUD.Open the live Weebly form now, choose the least clear field, replace its vague prompt with one relevant example, and publish the change. Then send a test enquiry from your phone and confirm that every label, instruction and response still reaches the right inbox.
